Loss to Niwot ends Bears’ soccer season

Playing on an unfamiliar field after enduring a four-hour bus trip is never easy. And host Niwot made the experience less than pleasurable for visiting Rifle by posting an 8-1 loss on the Bears in Tuesday’s Class 4A first-round soccer game.Brett Chesley scored Rifle’s only goal in the first half. It was his third goal of the season.The 12-3-1 Cougars, seeded 11th in the 32-team, single-elimination tournament, distanced themselves from their opponent when they scored three times in the initial 40 minutes.Niwot added five goals in the second half.Ryan Meske, the Cougars’ regular-season leading scorer, had two goals plus an assist. Mark Deault and Christian Douthit scored and assisted on a Niwot goal each.The Cougars’ Kevin Fischer, Dominic Gurule, Adam Schombing and Zach Dinkle all had solo goals.Rifle goalie Evan Muldoon and Justin Harris made 12 saves between them. Muldoon, before being lifted from the game in the second half, had nine saves. Harris, as reliever, made three saves.Rifle finished the season with an 8-8-0 overall record.In another 4A playoff game involving a Western Slope League team Tuesday, Battle Mountain advanced to the second round on a 5-3 win against Evergreen in Eagle-Vail.
