GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Garrett Lowe let ’er rip. And by doing that, his final mark in the shot put during the 34th annual Demon Invitational track and field meet sent a rippling effect across the shot put pit at Stubler Memorial Field on Saturday.

Lowe popped off a personal-best mark of 50 feet, 3 3/4 inches on his final attempt of the day in the shot put, punctuating the victory on an event he’d already sealed and ranking himself among the event’s top competitors in Class 4A. It was one of the big highlights of the day for both the boys and girls track and field teams at Glenwood Springs High School, each of which won the team championships in their annual home meet.

“I started looking at all of these other guys during warmups, and each one of them was hitting over 50,” said Lowe, whose previous best mark in the shot put was 48-4 at this year’s Rifle Invitational on March 14. “I looked out there and said to myself, ‘Wow. There’s some good competition today.’”

It turned out that Lowe was the only pesron who went over 50 feet when the event finals took place, and it unexpectedly earned him the top mark in the event. Palisade’s Brandon Worley, whose best put of 49-6 came in the Frank Woodburn Invitational the weekend prior to this one, finished third with a 44-6. Brayden Smith of Rifle finished second with a personal best mark of 48-9 1/4, beating his previous best by more than two feet.

Lowe’s mark was the one that spurred the biggest reaction, though. Since the Glenwood senior had the best mark at the end of the preliminary round, he was last in line to go during the finals. So when no one could match his mark in the final, he put a little extra effort into his third and final attempt.

It landed just past the 50-foot marker, sending up a huge cheer from the 50 or so people watching the event in person.

“That was the first time I’d hit 50 ever. Not even in practice,” said Lowe, whose mark is one of the five best in 4A, according to http://www.maxpreps.com. “Then I hit another PR during prelims and, at that point, I figured I had some potential.”

That potential helped give the Glenwood boys a team score of 115, with Palisade (92) and Rifle (91) following. On the girls side, the Glenwood girls claimed another team championship in their own meet with 144 points. Eagle Valley (96.33), which had many of its athletes missing due to spring break, was second, with Palisade (95) and Rifle (62.33) following.

Lowe also joined Cole Adams, Henry Hill and Kaden Weller in winning the 4×100-meter relay in 44.22 seconds. Also setting a big personal record was Adams, whose winning time of 11.33 in the 100 meters is a big improvement from a year ago.

“I was at 11.70 a year ago, so to go down by four-tenths of a second is just huge,” Adams said.

The biggest winner of the day wound up being Glenwood senior Delaney Gaddis, who didn’t even participate in track for the Demons last season. Regardless, she ended the day with a first-place finish in the long jump (16-9 3/4), the triple jump (35-11 3/4) and the 300 hurdles (49.25 seconds) before running the lead leg for the Demons’ 4×400 relay team, which claimed second place. Her distance in the triple jump was just 1/2 inch off the meet record set by Carmen Reiff of Glenwood Springs in 1985.

Claiming victory in both of her throwing events for Rifle was Brittany Neuroth, who earned a personal record by close to two feet with her winning put of 34-1 in the shot put and her winning throw of 114-1 in the discus — a distance that she, like Lowe, reached when she was making her last attempt and put some extra effort into her final throw.

“I just figured that if I scratched, oh well,” said Neuroth, who has claimed victory in each of the four meets she’s competed in for Rifle. “I knew I already had it, so I figured I should take a chance.”

Also winning multiple events for Glenwood was Kaden Weller, who claimed victory in the 200 meters in 23.01, and in the 300 hurdles in 41.04. Rifle’s Brenden Wagler nearly won both of the boys distance races holding on to prevail in the 1,600 in 4:48.53 before barely finishing second in the 3,200 in 10:37.59. He was exactly 2 seconds behind race winner Zach Walsh of Basalt, who won in 10:35.59.
