Markoya’s 22 paces Rams in win over Aspen

Staff Report

ASPEN – The Roaring Fork Rams boys’ basketball team pulled into a tie for second place in the 3A Western Slope League with a 62-50 upset win over Aspen Tuesday night at Aspen High School.

The Skiers’ shooting from outside couldn’t make up for Roaring Forks’ scoring from the charity stripe in the contest. Aspen (6-2), which defeated Roaring Fork 50-42 in Carbondale earlier in the season, hit eight 3-pointers to just two by the Rams (6-2). Roaring Fork, however, notched 20 points from the foul line to make up the difference.

Dan Markoya paced Roaring Fork with 22 points, while Nic Lough and Aaron Markham notched 18 and 11, respectively.

Lough’s 6-of-8 performance from the foul line was equal to that of the entire Skier squad.

Nick Farrell led Aspen with 22 points, including four treys, and Phil Salazar had 10.

Roaring Fork and Aspen are tied for second place in the WSL, trailing 7-0 Cedaredge. Roaring Fork hosts Olathe (0-7) Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Roaring Fork girls maintain dominance over Skiers

ASPEN – The Roaring Fork girls’ basketball squad, powered by 10 points each from Jessi Rochel and Ashley Jensen, downed the Aspen Skiers for the third time this season with a 46-40 3A WSL victory at Aspen High School.

The Rams’ defense held Aspen (4-4) to just five second-quarter points and took a 22-17 lead into the halftime intermission. Roaring Fork (6-2) expanded its lead to 36-27 by the end of the third.

Aspen’s Leandra Sivess had a game-high 13, and teammate Lizzie Suiter scored 12 points before fouling out.

The Rams, who trail 6-1 teams Basalt and Cedaredge in league standings, host Olathe (3-4) in a league game Saturday at 4 p.m.
