Messner strides to first in Brazil

Carrie Messner posted the United State’s fastest time of the year in the 3,000-meter women’s steeplechase after winning the IAAF Grand Premio Brazil Caixa de Atletismo in Belem, Brazil, on Sunday. The Carbondale resident finished with a time of 9 minutes, 41.55 seconds.The win also earned Messner 10 points in the World Athletics Tour event standings. With a total of 16 points after participating in two WAT events, Messner is tied with Donna MacFarlane of Australia for second place in the world. Both runners are four points behind current leader Jeruto Kimturn of Kenya.The top 15 ranked steeplechasers qualify for the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany, in September.In Brazil, Messner defeated event runner-up Lisa Galaviz of the United States. by more than seven seconds. Kimturn did not participate at this weekend’s meet.Messner’s winning time was only two seconds off her personal best of 9:39, run at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.Her next major scheduled competition is the annual U.S. National Championship in Indianapolis in late June.
