Moffat County nips Basalt in nonconference contest

BASALT – The Basalt Longhorns boys’ basketball team had a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on as Class 4A Moffat County downed the Class 3A Longhorns 65-62 Saturday at Basalt High School.

Three Longhorn players tallied double-digit scoring totals. Ryan Thompson led the squad with 15 points, while Danny Popish and Kyle Kappel had 14 and 13, respectively.

Basalt falls to 0-2 on the season.

Grand Valley 77,

Vail Christian 29

PARACHUTE – The Grand Valley boys opened the 2002-03 season with a 77-29 win over Vail Christian in the inaugural Grand Valley Invitational Tournament in Parachute Friday.

Senior Christian Tegtmeier scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first half that gave the Cardinals a commanding 39-12 lead at halftime.

Chris Johnson added 15 and Jason Couklin finished with 10 points.

Grand Valley travels to Meeker next weekend for the Cowboy Shootout.

Kent Denver 67,

Basalt 50

BASALT – The Basalt Longhorn boys fell to Class 3A power Kent Denver, 67-50, at the Big House Friday evening.

Dillon Johnson led the ‘Horns with 13 points. Kyle Kappel and Ryan Thompson scored 12 each. The Metro League Sun Devils had three players finish in double figures.

Will Meister had 12, Lee Barrow and Clayton Millice scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
