Momentum shift doesn’t favor Rams

CARBONDALE — The momentum the Olathe High School volleyball team built Saturday had a proverbial snowball effect against the Roaring Fork Rams.

Ask the Rams, though, and they’ll tell you that’s an understatement.

“Snowball effect?” Roaring Fork coach Jenn Dority asked. “More like an avalanche.”

Tori Davis had 14 kills and three blocks to lead the Pirates, who recovered from a close first set against the Rams before running away with a 27-25, 25-21, 25-8 Class 3A Western Slope League victory.

“We just worked well as a team and were really excited at first,” Roaring Fork senior Rosa Maun said. “We lost our mental focus in the last two. We kept messing up, and we couldn’t regain our mental focus to move on.”

Olathe (7-1 overall, 4-1 league play) took advantage. After holding on in the second set to build a 2-0 cushion in the match, the Pirates scored 11 of the first 12 points of the third set to essentially take control. At one point, Olathe held a 20-5 lead, with nine of the Pirates’ points coming on errors by the Rams.

Still, Roaring Fork (4-5, 1-2 league) was a different team when the match started.

It didn’t begin well, though, as a kill from Theresa Tafoya gave the Pirates a 19-11 lead. But Roaring Fork came roaring back, as a back-line kill from Taila Howe, followed by an Olathe hitting error, capped a 14-5 run and put the Rams at set point with a 25-24 lead.

A Roaring Fork hitting error followed, however, tying the set and giving serve back to Olathe. That’s when a pair of big plays were made by Davis, who hit a back-line ace to give set point back to the Pirates. Her ensuing serve hit the net, but deadened and trickled onto the Rams’ side to give Olathe a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“We played together very, very well for the first two sets of the match,” Dority said. “Having seen that potential, I really know now what we can do.”
