Mustangs buck Rifle’s grand softball season

Rifle’s softball team worked to a lot of achievements this year:A Western Slope League co-championship; An all-too-easy sweep through its district tournament for a District 5 title;A 17-6 overall record and a spot in the Class 4A state playoff regional round.Unfortunately for the No. 14-seeded Bears, that is where their season was cut short by No. 3 Ralston Valley, who beat Rifle, 14-2, on Friday in the single-elimination tournament. After the Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Kendall Babler put the Bears right back in the game in the second inning with a two-run line drive down the third-base line. Alissa Skinner and Jessica Martinez scored for Rifle to tie the game at 2.Then it all fell apart for Rifle in the third inning. The Mustangs smacked three home runs, including a three-run shot by Ashley Heller on their way to crossing the plate nine times in the frame and taking an 11-2 lead. The Bears’ bats were then turned off by Ralston Valley’s Cat Jenks, who only allowed one hit in the remainder of the contest.Kristen Felten, who knocked two home runs and totaled four RBIs in the game, connected for a three-run homer that ended the game because of the 10-run rule. The Bears will lose four seniors this year in Martinez, Sarah Brusig, Candace Stilson and Carrie Kreimier. On a bright note, six juniors will be back next year, including starters Babler, Skinner, Megan McWilliams and Chelsea Webb.
