Nelson sets senior series mark of 685

Glenwood Springs resident Bud Nelson has been around bowling for over seven decades, but that doesn’t take any of the shine off his latest accomplishment.

Nelson, 82, set a New Castle SuperBowl league record for senior bowlers Wednesday night with a 685 series – roughly 100 pins better than the previous mark, according to SuperBowl general manager Rick Connolly.

“That’s an exceptional game for somebody his age,” Connolly said. “For what we would call senior bowlers, it’s definitely a record. The next closest is probably going to be in the 580s.”

Nelson bowls for the Valley View Hospital team in the Wednesday Handicap League and realized early it would be a good night at the lanes.

In his first frame, Nelson picked up a 4-7-10 split. From there he literally rolled through the rest of the evening, finishing with a 222-216-247-685 total.

“I don’t remember the last time I picked that (spare) up, and everything from then on was just gravy,” Nelson said.

“It was one of those nights when everything went right,” he added. “I could hit the head pin anywhere and get a strike.”

Nelson, who has been bowling since about the age of 10, is no stranger to solid series scores. He rolled a career high 694 roughly 10 years ago at the old Glenwood Bowl. He was also part of a state classic handicap championship team.
