Offense runs dry in second half as Bears fall at Steamboat

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS ” Steamboat’s Jay Hanley scored three rushing touchdowns, Joe Dover added two more as the Sailors rolled up more than 300 yards rushing in Friday’s 42-27 win against Rifle at Gardner Field in Steamboat Springs.

After both teams put on an offensive clinic in the first half ” the teams combined for 551 yards of total offense in the first half ” two fumbles thwarted the Rifle attack in the second half.

Hazen Moss led the Bears on the ground and through the air. The senior quarterback finished the game 9-of-18 for 194 yards and two TDs, while adding a TD and 89 yards on the ground.

After Steamboat opened up a 21-7 lead, Rifle scored 20 points in the second quarter thanks in large part to Moss.

Brian Key cut the Steamboat lead to 21-13 with a 3-yard plunge.

The Bears then bookended TD passes around a Steamboat score to go into the half down 28-27.

But, after holding Steamboat to a three-and-out on the Sailors first possession of the second half, the Bears offense couldn’t find its first-half rhythm. On Rifle’s four second-half possessions, the Bears had three drives end in turnovers and another end in a three-and-out.

The loss leaves Rifle at 5-4 overall and 4-3 in Class 3A Western Slope League play. The Bears head into the final week of the season as the No. 4 seed out of the Western Slope League. In 2004 and 2005, the Bears advanced to the state finals as the No. 4 seed from the WSL. Rifle won a state title in 2004.
