Olenick squeaks into pipe finals

ASPEN ” Peter Olenick scored a 72 in Wednesday night’s skier superpipe elimination round in the opening day of Winter X Games 12, taking ninth place and advancing to the top-10 finals.

Olenick, a 24-year-old who was raised in Carbondale, took bronze in the event last year.

Two-time defending gold medalist Tanner Hall took first in the qualifying round, scoring a 95.33. Simon Dumont, who happens to be Olenick’s roommate and took silver last year, placed second with a 89.33 score.

The finals will hit the pipe tonight at 7:30 p.m. live on ESPN.
