Don’t be too surprised to see dabs of orange bleed through Leah Hinkey’s red and white Glenwood Springs High School volleyball uniform this season.

After fielding numerous inquiries from Division I programs from her sophomore year on, Hinkey has chosen to play for the University of Tennessee after graduating next spring.

She will be the third Glenwood Springs volleyball player in recent years to play at the Division I level.

Hinkey made her decision after touring the campus and meeting the coaching staff during a recruiting trip to Knoxville, Tenn., back in April.

“The coaches were really nice, and so was the university,” she said. Hinkey was also impressed by the state’s support of its university’s athletic teams.

Team coaching staffs, according to NCAA rules, cannot comment on high school recruits until students sign a letter of intent.

Hinkey said the coaching staff indicated that she could be inserted in the Vols’ starting lineup in her freshman year.

Another reason the four-year Demon varsity standout opted for Tennessee was the volleyball program’s status.

“My goal was to go and play for a Top 10 college program,” Hinkey said.

Now, that Hinkey’s settled on her future. The senior, all-state middle hitter can focus on her final high school season.

“Its a big relief,” Hinkey said. “Now I can relax and have fun playing in high school and not worry about college.”
