A charmed day on the Roaring Fork River

On the Roaring Fork River with Mount Sopris looming in the background.

This week I finally had one of those floats you dream about. I’ve never had one like it and understand enough to realize I probably won’t again, at least for a long while. Despite the Roaring Fork being on the high side, I headed out with a few of the guides for a jaunt from Carbondale down to Glenwood Springs. The best way to sum it up is that I just couldn’t miss. It was a charmed day of fishing, through and through.

For starters, I didn’t lose any of my three fly rigs all day. I probably put all of them in the willows over a dozen times, but always got them back. Every single time. The fish were everywhere you’d expect them to be, plus everywhere you wouldn’t expect them, too. Fast water, slow water, dirty water and clean, they were there. I’d say I had a fish multiple times when picking the flies up to recast, it was just that ridiculous.

I’ve been around long enough now to know how rare a day this was, at least for me. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard or had so much fun; my sides and hands still hurt from all the belly laughs, fist bumps and repeat hookups. According to the young punks I was out with, I achieved “legendary status” that day.

Being a glutton for punishment, I went out and floated the following day. Every day on these rivers is a gift, and some days give more than others. I’ll bet you wouldn’t be surprised to hear I didn’t hook a single fish. I was just as happy, though.
