Local Fishing Report

While the Colorado, Roaring Fork and Crystal rivers are doing their May run-off thing, conditions are not ideal for fishing for the next few weeks.

Fryingpan River

Flow: 120 CFS

Short and Sweet: The clarity is gin-clear on the upper reaches of the Fryingpan this week, the water will get slightly stained the farther downriver you fish. Rocky Fork Creek is starting to get high near the top of the river, which will add a bit of color to the top river as the heat continues this week. It has simply been hotter on the lower stretches lately, which has resulted in strong BWO, midge and caddis hatches. Stoneflies are starting to move around on the lower and middle sections as well. For the up-top-only anglers, bring the midges and 7x, a few baetis patterns, mysis shrimp and a few eggs. For the folks willing to embrace the middle and lower river, be sure to carry San Juan Worms, Cat Poop stones (on the small side) caddis larvae, and small, dark baetis nymphs. Streamers are hot still, bring them out on cloudy days or after the sun goes behind the hill.

Appropriate Patterns:

Bill’s Midge Emerger 20-22, Sprout Midge 22-24, Roy’s Special BWO Emerger 20-22, CDC Comparadun 20-22, Sands Epoxy Mysis 16-20, BTS Mysis 16-20, Eggs 16-18, San Juan Worm 10, Slumpbuster 6-8, Sculpzilla 6-8, RS2 20-22, Sands STD Dark 22.
