Private land youth turkey hunt opportunity offered in Craig

CRAIG — Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering two young hunters a chance to win a mentored spring turkey hunt on private land west of Craig, May 3 and 4. The hunt is offered through the agency’s Hunter Outreach Program and made possible with the help and support of local landowners working in partnership with state wildlife managers.

A continuing goal of the Hunter Outreach Program is to instill an interest and respect for wildlife, the outdoors and the traditions of hunting in Colorado’s youth.

“A mentored hunt is one of the best ways to pass along the love of the outdoors and hunting to our youth,” said Mike Swaro, hunt organizer and District Wildlife Manager in Craig. “We have offered a similar hunt near Meeker and we have had the opportunity to meet some fantastic kids that have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the various aspects of hunting turkeys. The experience is really a highlight of my career.”

The applicant’s interest in hunting, limited experience and desire to learn are suggested topics for the required essay.

All youth hunters are encouraged to apply; however, those that have little or no experience will be given priority over experienced hunters.

The two winning participants will be notified by April 22. They must also be able to attend a pre-hunt orientation at CPW’s warehouse in Craig, May 2, from 4 – 6 p.m., accompanied by a parent, guardian or mentor.

CPW will provide shotguns, ammunition, blinds and calls. Selected hunters must provide their own camouflage clothing, lodging and food.

For more information or questions, call the CPW office in Meeker at 970-878-6090.
