Peetz rumbles for 231 yards in ‘Horns victory

Staff ReportBASALT – The Basalt Longhorns are a third of the way to their win total of last season, and running back Clayton Peetz has a pretty good jump on his individual statistics, too.Peetz galloped for 231 yards on 34 carries and scored on a 58-yard touchdown run to lead Class 2A Basalt to a 13-0 opening-day victory over Class 1A Meeker Friday night.The Longhorn defense backed up the effort of Peetz and the offensive side with a shutout that included four turnovers. J.T. Donovan and Justin Kovach both recovered Meeker fumbles, with Kovach running his into the end zone from 4 yards out. Kris Kemp and Riley Eaton each had interceptions. Frank Howard led the team in tackles with seven.After a scoreless first quarter Peetz got the Longhorns on the board in the second quarter with his long run. Basalt kept the seven-point lead until Kovach’s turnover touchdown in the fourth quarter.The Longhorns travel to Grand Valley for a nonconference contest Friday.
