Prep baseball: Green Mountain roughs up Rifle

Staff Report

LAKEWOOD — Rifle High School’s baseball team found out what it’s like to play one of the best teams in Colorado on Friday.

Green Mountain, the top-ranked team in Class 4A, used a seven-run first inning and a 10-hit attack to beat the Bears 12-2 in five innings.

“I think this gave our guys a pretty good idea of what one of the top teams in the state looks like,” Rifle coach Troy Phillips said. “It showed the guys what we need to do to get there. We still have a long way to go, but this at least set the bar a little bit.”

Ty Leyba scored both of Rifle’s runs, with both of them coming on RBI groundouts by Layton Stutsman. Leyba had a double, and Gabe Marbas and Takoda Chaney each had singles for the Bears (6-5).

Talon Schaller had the pitching win for Green Mountain (7-2), allowing five walks and one earned run with six strikeouts in five innings. He also went 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs. Jeremy Whorton went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Rams.

Rifle continues nonleague play when it goes to Craig today to play Moffat County.
