The wait is finally over for the Basalt girls soccer team.

After earning a regional bye for winning the regular-season 3A Western Slope League title, the Longhorns open the first round of the state playoffs at home against Colorado Springs Evangelical Christian of the Black Forest League.

Basalt is seeded third in the 16-team, single-elimination tournament. Evangelical Christian is the No. 14 seed.

Eagle Valley, the other Western Slope team that advanced to the state playoffs, is the No. 12 team. It will travel to No. 5 Kent Denver for their first-round contest.

The date and time of the Basalt-Evangelical Christian playoff game has yet to be set, but according to the Colorado High School Activities Association, which governs the state tournament, all first-round games must be played by May 15.

Roaring Fork, the runner-up in this weekend’s 3A regional baseball tournament in Paonia, has advanced to the 3A state baseball playoffs. The tournament bracket will be released later today.

All four of Glenwood Springs’ girls tennis state qualifiers will begin action in the 4A state tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Pueblo City Park courts. First-round pairings for the tournament were unavailable at press time.
