Coal Ridge rebounded from a 1-0 halftime deficit to escape Paonia with a 2-1 boys soccer win on Saturday.Ryan Zelenka and Darwin Cortez struck for second-half goals to lift the Titans, who improved to 4-6 in the Class 3A Western Slope League.Zelenka’s goal came courtesy of an assist by Cortez, who dropped a ball off at about the 18-yard box. Zelenka took the pass and fired a shot on net.Cortez’s goal came when teammate J.J. Riddile directed a through ball past about four defenders. Darwin took the ball on a breakaway run and converted.The Titans host Roaring Fork on Tuesday.

The Basalt boys soccer team, locked in a battle for first place in the Class 3A Western Slope League, shut out visiting Roaring Fork 2-0 on Saturday.”They’re a hard team,” Roaring Fork coach John Ackerman said. “We gave it our best, but we didn’t do it.”Next up for Ackerman’s Rams, now 1-6-3 in league and 2-6-3 overall, is a Tuesday trip to Coal Ridge.Basalt improved to 10-1 in league and to 11-3 overall.

A match after taking a tough Moffat County team to five games on Thursday, Rifle couldn’t muster the firepower to do the same against Steamboat Springs on Saturday, losing in three games, 25-4, 25-23, 25-13.The Bears put together their best volleyball in the second game, where they combined for eight kills, with Abbey Schmidt knocking down a pair and Sandy Samson adding another to tie the game at 12.Rifle is now 0-12 in the 4A Western Slope League while the Sailors improved to 9-3.
