PREP ROUNDUP: Bears clinch 4A WSL title, Titans topple Skiers
Taking on the Eagle Valley Devils on Tuesday with a chance to clinch the 4A Western Slope League regular season title, the Rifle Bears boys basketball team handled their business on Senior Night, emerging with a 55-49 win.
After scoring just 18 first-half points, the Bears exploded for 36 second-half points to put away the Devils.
Senior forward Morgan Robinson continued his strong play for the second straight game, pouring in a game-high 15 points, while junior forward Jacob Boone added 14 points for Rifle.
With the win, Rifle improves to 17-2 (12-1 4A WSL) overall on the year.
Due to the Palisade loss to Glenwood on Tuesday, the Bears were able to celebrate their second league title under head coach Roger Walters.
Rifle will travel to Battle Mountain on Friday.
BEARS TOPPLE DEVILS
The Rifle Bears girls basketball team picked up a big win, Tuesday, over the Eagle Valley Devils on Senior Night inside the newly named Jack Smith Auditorium, 54-38.
Sophomore guard Elly Walters scored a game-high 17 points for the Bears, while junior guard Samantha Hinkle and sophomore guard Jessie Pressler chipped in with 14 and eight points respectively.
Senior guard Reese Hoffmeister added five points on a night where the Bears celebrated her final home game as a member of the program.
With the win, Rifle improves to 15-4 (11-2 4A WSL) overall on the year.
TITANS BURY SKIERS
Behind 22 points from junior forward Hunter Gerber, 13 points from sophomore guard Brandon Herrera and 12 points from senior guard Jake Solinger, the Coal Ridge Titans dispatched the Aspen Skiers on Tuesday, 63-52.
Gerber scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter, sparking the Titans to the win on their home court, bouncing back from a tough loss at Gunnison.
Coal Ridge will travel to Moffat County on Friday.
TITANS PULL OUT WIN OVER SKIERS
Sophomore guard Santana Martinez continues to be a revelation for the Coal Ridge offense.
Against the visiting Aspen Skiers on Tuesday, Martinez poured in a game-high 12 points to lead the Titans to a 44-32 win on their home floor.
Along with Martinez, senior guards Cortnay Young and Jenny Call added nine and seven points respectively for the Titans to help pace the offensive attack.
With the win, the Titans improve to 7-9 (6-5 3A WSL) overall on the year.
