Prep roundup: Bears roll past Basalt
RIFLE — Gabe Marbas pitched five solid shutout innings and Ty Leyba finished 2-for-4 batting with four RBIs for Rifle High Schools baseball team, which took control from the beginning on their way to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Basalt at Cooper Field on Wednesday.
Marbas went the distance in the five-inning, mercy rule game, allowing just two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Ivan Quezada had a pair of RBIs for the Bears (2-2 overall), who used a four-run second inning to take control and a three-run fifth inning to close out the game.
Rifle hosts Summit in a 4A Western Slope League doubleheader on Saturday.
Grand Valley drops two against Gunnison
PARACHUTE — Grand Valley’s baseball team wasn’t able to keep up with defending 3A Western Slope League champions in its season-opening doubleheader, falling 16-0 in seven innings in the opener and 12-0 in the five-inning second game.
Coach Rory Roder complimented the pitching performance of Grand Valley’s Jared Radel, who he said ran out of gas after the fifth inning of the first game with the Cardinals down 6-0. Gunnison took command in the second game in allowing just two hits, with Logan Olson recording one of them and pitching two solid innings, Roder said.
The Cardinals (0-2) play a league doubleheader at Coal Ridge on Saturday.
