PREP ROUNDUP: Demons bite Bulldogs with big boys soccer rally

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Cameron Horning scored a goal with 10 minutes remaining in Glenwood Springs High School’s Class 4A Western Slope League soccer match against Palisade, capping the Demons’ rally from a two-goal halftime deficit for a 4-3 victory over Palisade.

Oscar Gallegos scored goals for the Demons in the first and second half, and Ben Dunn’s header goal off a corner kick from Andrew Tucker tied the match at 3-all after the Demons (3-2-0 overall, 2-2-0 league) were down 3-1 at halftime. Then came Horning’s goal, which was the last of three unanswered scores the Demons notched to complete the comeback.

Glenwood coach Steve White credited Mason Yellico and Elias Vasquez for helping provide the Demons’ offensive spark in the second half. Vasquez had an assist on Gallegos’ second goal, which brought Glenwood within one.

“I’m really proud of how the guys responded,” White said. “They really kept things alive. Those are some hard-working kids out there.”

Roaring Fork 4,

Vail Mountain 3, OT

VAIL — Vail Mountain rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to send the Class 3A Region 3 match into overtime, but the Rams scored the go-ahead goal in the extra frame to earn the league victory.

Alex Fisher had nine saves in goal, Erik Carillo scored a pair of goals and Lalo Clement and Lorenzo Andrate added goals for Roaring Fork (4-1-1), which plays a key league match at Coal Ridge on Thursday.


Coal Ridge def. Rifle 25-15, 25-15, 25-14

PEACH VALLEY — Brittany Allen finished with 10 kills and six blocks for the Titans (9-1 overall), who rebounded from a league loss to Gunnison this past Saturday with a victory over the Bears.

Bailey Davis chipped in nine kills and Alicia Hampton contributed six kills and three blocks for Coal Ridge in the three-set sweep. Coal Ridge heads to Aspen on Thursday.

Roaring Fork def. Aspen 25-12, 25-23, 26-24

CARBONDALE — Rosa Maun finished with a match-high 12 kills, Toni Gross chipped in 27 assists, and Roaring Fork rebounded from its league loss to Olathe this past Saturday with a sweep of the Skiers on Tuesday.

Josie Horn added 11 digs and four aces, and Yaritza Zarte chipped in 14 digs for the Rams (5-5, 2-2 Class 3A Western Slope League), who continue league play at Gunnison on Saturday.


Demons fare well at Buena Vista meet

BUENA VISTA — Courtney Lippman and Phillip Hecksel set the pace for the Glenwood Springs High School Cross Country team during the Demons’ outing at the Buena Vista Invitational cross country meet on Tuesday.

Lippman finished 11th overall in 23 minutes, 30 seconds, to finish as Glenwood’s highest finisher. Madi Spence was 25th (25:16) and Jenna Brown 26th (25:18) as the Demons finished fifth as a team.

For the Glenwood boys, Hecksel, a freshman, managed a 24th-place finish in 21:40. The Demons finished in sixth place in the team standings.


Delta 3, Rifle 2

DELTA — The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning against the Bears and held on for a Class 4A Western Slope League win.

Rifle, which managed five hits in the game, fell to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. Rifle plays next at home against Eagle Valley on Sept. 24.
