Prep roundup: Rams rally past Longhorns in boys soccer
BASALT — Ben Carpenter scored on a penalty kick to tie the match, and Zack Ritchie’s goal in the 70th minute capped a come-from-behind victory for Roaring Fork High School’s boys soccer team in a 2-1 class 3A Region 3 victory over Basalt on Thursday.
Carpenter knotted the score with his goal in the 20th minute, then assisted Ritchie’s score with 10 minutes remaining in regulation to complete the rally for Roaring Fork (5-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 league play).
“The team finally put it out there when it counted,” Roaring Fork coach Nick Forbes said. “They just flat out had the desire today.”
It’s the second time the Rams have played the Longhorns this year. Basalt beat Roaring Fork, 2-1, in a nonleague match early this month.
Roaring Fork plays again Saturday with a nonleague game at Glenwood Springs.
Coal Ridge 2, Aspen 0
ASPEN — Coal Ridge goalkeeper Isidro Contreras assisted a goal from Charles Apostolik, then preserved the shutout in goal the keep the Titans (6-1-0 overall, 3-0-0 league) unbeaten in Class 3A Region 3 play.
Enrique Bucio scored the initial goal for Coal Ridge on a first-half penalty kick. The Titans’ defense held firm, allowing just five shot attempts and three shots on goal.
“I thought we really controlled possession of the ball today,” Coal Ridge coach Michael Mikalakis said. “That was a great thing to see.”
The Titans’ next scheduled contest, which was slated for Saturday against Colorado Rocky Mountain School, was postponed due to a scheduling error. Coal Ridge and CRMS are tied atop the league standings following the Titans’ win.
Coal Ridge will play its next match Tuesday against Basalt.
Grand Valley 1, Moffat County 1
PARACHUTE — Luis Pena’s unassisted goal in the 15th minute gave the Cardinals (1-8-1, 0-5-1 league) the initial lead, but the Bulldogs scored an equalizer in the 29th minute.
Junior Ben Coleman finished with eight saves in goal for Grand Valley, which plays a nonleague match next Tuesday at Delta.
Coal Ridge def. Moffat County 25-11, 25-20, 25-15
CRAIG — Bailey Davis finished with nine kills and Paige Ryan added eight kills, four assists and three stuff-blocks for the seventh-ranked Titans (11-1, 4-1 league) in their easy Class 3A Western Slope League victory over the winless Bulldogs (0-11, 0-7).
Alicia Hampton added eight kills in the Titans’ balanced attack. Coal Ridge is off until next Thursday when it goes to Basalt for a league match.
Basalt 19, Grand Valley 0
BASALT — The Longhorns finished with 11 base hits and held the Cardinals (5-9 overall, 2-3 league) without a hit on their way to a Class 3A Western Slope League victory over Grand Valley.
The Cardinals continue league play at Cedaredge on Saturday.
