Prep roundup: Rifle boys, girls earn wins vs. Delta
RIFLE — Samantha Hinkle finished with a game-high 17 points and Elly Walters added 13 for the Rifle High School girls basketball team, which rallied from a large early deficit on its way to a 43-36 Class 4A Western Slope League victory against Delta on Tuesday.
Hinkle and Walters also had five rebounds each, and Walters added four assists for the Bears (11-6 overall, 7-4 league play), which has won four of its past five games. The Bears trailed the Panthers (7-9, 4-7 league) 19-11 at halftime before the Bears opened the third quarter with a 16-3 run. The run was sparked by a 3-pointer from Reece Hoffmeister.
Twelve of the 17 points Hinkle scored came in the second half. The Bears scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a 12-for-15 performance at the free throw line in the final stanza.
Rifle 55, Delta 48
RIFLE — Luis Carreon finished with a game-high 15 points and six assists, and Rifle took a big lead early and held on for a league victory against the Panthers.
Austin Bone finished with 10 rebounds — eight of them coming on the offensive boards — and Morgan Robinson and Avery Lujan each added three assists.
“We really attacked their 2-3 zone in the first quarter,” Rifle coach Roger Walters said. “We got up 15-3 after one quarter and … it wasn’t until the last quarter when we started making some poor choices that they got close.”
Rifle hosts Glenwood Springs on Saturday.
Glenwood Springs 48, Coal Ridge 33
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Senior 132-pounder Irvin Pallares earned an aggressive victory by pin in his weight class, and the Demons prevailed over the Titans in their final home dual meet of the season.
Pallares pinned Noah Gurule in 1:22 in what Glenwood coach Miles Wilson called one of the more inspired performances of the night for his wrestlers. Also earning the coach’s praise was Jake Ries, who pinned Gage Clemons in 4:37.
Also winning by pin for Glenwood was heavyweight Rudy Devora, Myles Wilson (152), and Cristian Gonzalez (195). Coal Ridge also had some wins from Danny Wenzel (106, 8-4 win over Felix Cano), Justin Goodsell (pin at 138, Nick Carbone (pin at 182) and Logan Stephens (pin at 170).
Coal Ridge and Glenwood each wrestle in a dual-meet tournament in Meeker on Saturday.
