Prep roundup: Rifle volleyball coach happy with team’s effort against Gunnison

RIFLE — Even after a loss, Rifle High School volleyball coach Erin Reider didn’t have much to complain about following a Class 3A Western Slope League loss to Gunnison on Saturday.

“They battled right with them,” Reider said following the Bears’ 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 loss to the sixth-ranked Cowboys. “A lot of times in the past these girls would lose and get down on themselves right away. They kept getting better today.”

Jordan Cody finished with eight kills and two blocks and Annie Schmidt added seven kills and a pair of blocks for the Bears (5-7 overall, 1-3 league). Aside from the opening set, Rifle never fell into a huge deficit and led by as much as 7-1 in the third set.

Katelyn Shanahan added five kills, Leah Antonelli added 13 digs and Sarah McCutchen chipped in 16 digs for the Bears.

Rifle will continue league play at home against Aspen on Tuesday. A win would match the Bears’ 2012 win total of six victories with six matches remaining on the schedule.

Rifle splits softball games against Cortez, Durango

DURANGO — Rifle’s softball team got a pair of wins and a pair of losses this weekend, sweeping a doubleheader against Montezuma-Cortez on Friday before dropping a pair of games to Durango on Saturday.

The Bears tallied 27 hits in the 10-0 and 15-6 victories against the Panthers. Emma Speer and Antonia Speer each drove in three runs in the 15-6 win, and Taylor Gore walked none and allowed just five hits in the 10-0 victory.

Against Durango, Rifle lost by scores of 6-4 and 7-2. The Bears had 14 hits in the two games, but the Demons needed a three-run sixth inning to rally from a 4-3 deficit in their 6-4 victory.

Rifle (8-8 overall) continues Class 4A Western Slope League play Tuesday at Palisade.
