ASPEN ” Glenwood Springs girls tennis coach Phyllis Zilm is loving life with eight seniors in her lineup. On Thursday, that veteran crew ” and the help of a few younger players ” sent Zilm and her Demons home with a 4-3 win over host Aspen.

“It pays to have eight seniors on your varsity team, I guess,” Zilm said with a laugh.

Teka Israel is one of those seniors. At No. 3 singles, she rebounded from a slow start to top the Skiers’ Casey Altman in three sets (5-7, 6-2, 10-7).

At No. 1 doubles, senior duo Megan McGavock and Tess Kennedy knocked out Aspen’s Annie Buetton and Chelsea Hanle in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. At No. 4 doubles, Demon seniors Siobhan Sullivan and Haylie Westphal teamed up to sweep past Sydney Madary and Kaitlin Safchik and, at No. 3 doubles, Taylor Smith and Kelly Lawson paired up to beat the Skiers’ Rio Crandall and Mimi Rogers, 6-3, 7-5.

Lawson and No. 1 and No. 2 singles Demons Madison McCallum and Courtney Bender are the only non-seniors that started against Aspen on Thursday.

McCallum won her No. 1 singles pairing with Aspen’s Whitney Hubbell in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 10-7).

Glenwood will travel to face Steamboat on Saturday.

PARACHUTE ” Playing host to Eagle Valley’s junior varsity baseball team on Thursday, Grand Valley picked up a 7-6 win to open the season on the right foot.

Next up for the Cardinals is an April 1 home date with Glenwood’s JV team.
