RIFLE, Colorado” The emotion spilled over as Rifle defeated Delta in 4 close, hard-fought games for their first home volleyball league win in five years.

Understandably, the Bears were simply unable to contain their emotions and tears of joy ran down their faces once the final shot fell to the floor.

GYPSUM, Colorado ” What was a 1-0 game at halftime turned into a shootout in Eagle Valley on Thursday, as the host Devils knocked off Rifle, 6-3, in boys soccer.

Jose Salazar beat three defenders and sunk a shot in the lower left corner of the net to account for one of the Bears’ goals. Pablo Salgado headed home a well-placed cross from his brother, Ricky, for another score and Hector Ruiz nailed a 30-yarder for Rifle, which hung with Eagle Valley, which is tied for first place in the 4A Western Slope League at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in league.

“I give the boys a lot of credit,” Rifle coach Ryan Mahler said. “That’s the best I’ve ever seen them play, the way they were moving around the ball.”

Mahler’s Bears dropped to 2-5 overall and to 2-3 in the 4A WSL.

PEACH VALLEY, Colorado ” Diego Rubio scored two second-half goals as Roaring Fork downed host Coal Ridge 2-0 on Thursday.
