RIFLE, Colorado ” The Rifle Bears faced the Steamboat Springs Sailors at home Friday with the girls winning 57-53 in overtime and the boys losing 65-38.

In the girls’ game, Rifle (10-3 overall, 5-0 in the 4A Western Slope League) was up seven points near the end of the fourth, but the Sailors (5-8, 2-3) tied it up with three seconds left, forcing overtime.

The Bears held Steamboat to a lone 3-pointer in the extra period, and they put up seven for the win.

Sandy Samson had 14 points to lead the Bears.

Following the girls game, the Rifle boys didn’t defend well early and couldn’t keep it close.

The Bears (6-8, 3-2) were down 19-9 after one and couldn’t get back into the game, coach Chris Lowther said.

Steamboat (8-5, 5-0) got to the bucket too easily in the first half, partly due to poor one-on-one defense from the Bears. Tyler Rust had 14 points and Eric Laudick added 13.
