PARACHUTE, Colorado ” Starting the game short a player in memory of fallen teammate Emily Johnson, Coal Ridge’s girls soccer team opened its season with a 7-0 win at Grand Valley on Thursday.

Chelsie Ryan scored three goals to lead the Titans. Sydney Wright added two and Audrey Asplund and Erica Ruiz each added a goal.

Johnson died in November as a result of injuries suffered during an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident.



GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” Taking five of the afternoon’s seven matches, Glenwood Springs knocked off visiting Roaring Fork in girls tennis play on Thursday.

Madison McCallum (No. 1 singles), Courtney Bender (No. 2) and Jackie Nickel (No. 3) worked a singles sweep in the Demons’ favor.



Billie McCauley and Hannah Thimsen scored Glenwood a win at No. 3 doubles, while Sara Beckwith and Amber Kight paired up to win at No. 4 doubles.

Roaring Fork’s wins came courtesy of No. 1 doubles duo Maria Flores and Landon Garvik and No. 2 doubles twosome Joey Clingan and Niki Burns.

RIFLE, Colorado ” Rifle topped Basalt 7-3 in the Bears’ baseball opener on Thursday.

FORT COLLINS, Colorado ” Due to an inaccurate statistics report furnished by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), some point totals in the Coal Ridge-Eaton boys basketball game story that appeared in Friday’s Post Independent were incorrect.

Eric Schmitz scored 21 points for the Titans, followed by Alex Klein with eight, Andy Smedra with six, Rafael Fabela with three, Robby Rausin, Adam Miller and Nathan Terrin with two and Jonathon Roessler with one.
