RIFLE, Colorado ” Rifle’s baseball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Battle Mountain, beating the Huskies 21-5 in the opener and 16-0 in the second game. Both games lasted five innings.

Dwight Cerise and Chris Hesselberg picked up wins on the hill for the Bears, now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the 4A Western Slope League. Hesselberg had a complete-game shutout in the nightcap.

Both fared well at the plate, too. Cerise combined to go 6-for-7 with seven runs scored in the doubleheader, while Hesselberg was 9-for-9.

Cody Chick added a 6-for-7 afternoon, while Luke Buss and Cody Chick were each 4-for-5 in the opener. Tanner Wilcox went 3-for-3 in the second game.

Rifle is scheduled to take on rival Glenwood Springs at the Glenwood Springs Middle School diamond at 3 p.m. today.

VAIL, Colorado ” Kathy Vega scored Roaring Fork’s lone goal in a 5-1 girls soccer loss at Vail Mountain on Monday.

“Ball control and communication is the key,” said Rams coach Ivone Munoz, whose team fell to 0-6-0 overall. “They (Vail Mountain) always do really good with that.”

Next up for Roaring Fork is a Thursday trip to Rangely.

PARACHUTE, Colorado ” Grand Valley’s girls soccer team limped through its first game right out of spring break, dropping a 10-0 decision to visiting Aspen on Monday.

The Cardinals fell to 1-7-0 overall and to 1-6-0 in the 3A WSL with the loss and will next take the pitch Thursday at home against Vail Christian.
