Prep track and field: Local state qualifiers

Beginning this year, the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has adopted a rankings-based qualification system for its state track and field meet at the 4A and 5A classifications.

Athletes who achieve marks that rank in the top 18 statewide during the course of the season are seeded for the state meet on an event-by-event basis. Marks must be obtained at meets fulfilling specific qualifying criteria.

Here are the athletes from Glenwood Springs and Rifle high schools headed to the state meet:



Boys

400 – 17. Travis Whitman, Jr., Glenwood, 50.96.



800 – 12. Ryan Buchanan, So., Glenwood, 1:59.48.

110 hurdles – 6. Dakota Stonehouse, Sr., Glenwood, 15.11; 9. Kurt Hartmann, Sr., Glenwood, 15.29.

Coal Ridge

Boys: DaLin Murphy, Sr., 1,600 and 3,200; DaNivin Murphy, Jr., 800; Bradey Gasaway, Sr., 300 hurdles; Brandon Schlegel, Jr., triple jump; 4×100 relay; 4×200 relay; 4×400 relay; 4×800 relay.

Girls: Chelyn McCain, Jr., 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles; Jessica Needham, Sr., shot put; 800 sprint medley relay.

Roaring Fork

Boys: Tyler Thompson, Sr., long jump and triple jump; Jon Araujo, Sr., shot put and discus; Bryan Salinas, Sr., 300 hurdles; 4×200 relay.

Grand Valley

Boys: Omar Melendrez, So., 200 and 400; Sam Whelan, Jr., 3,200; Colton Cowan, Sr., 110 hurdles and long jump; Jared Tonder, Jr., 300 hurdles; Joe Joyner, Sr., discus; 4×800 relay.

Girls: Brandi Krieg, So., 400, 1,600 and 3,200; Erin Vanderpool, Jr., 100 and 300 hurdles; Jordan Steinke, Fr., long jump; 4×100 relay, 4×400 relay, 4×800 relay.

When: Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16.

Where: Jefferson County Stadium, 500 Kipling Street, Lakewood.

Admission: $8 each day for adults, $6 for students (K-12), $6 senior citizens.

Barlow, Perkins win 42nd Sopris Runoff 14-miler

The 50th Carbondale Mountain Fair last weekend included the 42nd running of the Mt. Sopris Runoff 14-miler and its companion 4-Mile Fair Run foot races after a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
