Preps roundup: Glenwood Springs girls soccer scores win; Coal Ridge shines at North Fork track meet

Playing their first home game of the season Tuesday, the Glenwood Springs High School girls soccer team scored a 3-0 win over Palisade to grab the early lead in the 4A Western Slope League.

All three Demons goals came in the first half of play, with scores by senior Ella Johnson and sophomores Taia Nykerk and Victoria Taylor.

Johnson and sophomore Sydney Schriock also had assists.



Glenwood improved to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play with the win.

In other soccer action involving area teams Tuesday, it was Delta 4-1 over Rifle and Eagle Valley 2-0 over Coal Ridge.

Baseball results

Weather postponed some baseball action this week, but Roaring Fork did get its baseball game in at home Tuesday versus Montrose, falling 10-0. Rams senior Nolan Pierson went 1-for-2 on the afternoon.

In Wednesday action, it was Roaring Fork over Cedaredge on the road, 20-9, as the Rams opened a big lead with a 10-run third inning. Pierson went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Junior Brody Samuelson was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and sophomore Noel Richardson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Junior Sebastian Silva picked up the pitching win. Roaring Fork improved to 2-1 on the season.

Coal Ridge 7, Meeker 6: Four runs in the bottom of the sixth propelled the Titans to a win and a 2-0 record. Freshman Logan Harlow was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Coal Ridge track teams second at North Fork Invite

Coal Ridge and Roaring Fork boys and girls track and field athletes took part in the North Fork Invitational last Saturday in Hotchkiss.

Both Titans teams took second place in the team scoring, with the girls finishing just behind Cedaredge 135-134, and the boys scoring 122 to the host Miners’ 136 points.

Event winners for the Lady Titans included senior Peyton Garrison, who swept the sprint events, winning the 100 meters (12.57 seconds), 200 meters (25.6) and 400 meters (57.71).

Junior Mikayla Cheney won the 800 meters (2:23.38) and 1600 meters (5:21.40), and senior Araceli Ayala was second in the 1600 (5:51.9).

The Titans’ 4×100 (52.5) and 800 sprint medley (1:54.65) relays took first, and the 4×200 finished second (1:49.6).

Other top-3 finishers were: Jackie Camunez, third 100 meters (13.37); Natalie Smythe, second 400 meters (1:04.46); Addy Davis, third discus (102-5.7); and Brilee Jensen, third shot put (33-2).

First-place finishers among the Coal Ridge boys was Omar Vergara in the 200 meters (24 seconds) and the 400 meters (54.34); Eddie Salazar, who won the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 10 inches; and the 800 sprint medley relay (1:45.5)

Top-3 finishers for the Titans included: Dylan Campbell, second 800 meters (2:10.27); Tyler Parker, third 1600 meters (5:09.73); AJ Montes, third 110-meter hurdles (17.95) and third 300 hurdles (45.81); Salazar, second long jump (19-6.5); Yahir Loya, third triple jump (36-03); Erick Monroy, third discus (94-05.25). The boys 4×100 relay was second in 48.05

Top-3 finishers for Roaring Fork athletes were Cole Pargiter-Walker, second in the boys 100 (12 seconds); Isabella Moon, third in the girls 1600 meters (6:17.2);and the boys 4×200 relay, third (1:38.93).
