Glenwood Springs baseball edges Coal Ridge 12-11 in thriller

Hosting the Coal Ridge Titans Thursday afternoon in West Glenwood in the final game before a trip to Arizona for spring break baseball, the Glenwood Springs Demons edge the visiting Titans 12-11 in a thrilling back-and-forth affair between the non-league opponents.

The Titans trailed 9-3 heading into the top of the sixth inning before rallying, forcing the Demons to walk the game off in the bottom of the seventh inning with a run for the win in non-league play.

Glenwood scored two runs in the second, five runs in the third, and two runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead over Coal Ridge before the Titans roared back with three runs in the sixth and five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 11-11.



In the 12-11 win, junior Ashlan Stolley led the way offensively for the Demons, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and three runs scored on the afternoon. Joining Stolley with a strong offensive day was senior Dylan Lee and junior Sam Fitzwilliams with two hits each, while sophomore Garrett Dollahan, senior Chano Gonzalez, junior Cole Houston, senior Ryan Welsch, and senior Liam McMahon added one hit each. Dollahan and Welsch led the Demons with three RBIs each, while Houston, Lee, McMahon, and senior Tyler Dollahan drove in one run each.

Gonzalez and Garrett Dollahan recorded a double each, accounting for the lone extra base hits for Glenwood on the day, while Fitzwilliams stole three bases for Glenwood.



On the mound in the offensive explosion, Houston worked 4.1 innings, allowing just three runs while striking out 11 and walking five. Lee worked two innings allowing eight runs, while Fitzwilliams worked two-thirds of an inning of scoreless baseball.

For Coal Ridge, junior Ryan Kotz and sophomore Carson Miller led the Titans with two hits each, while juniors Jared Lund, Ivan Gallardo, Lane Stecklien and Kevin Cordasco, and sophomore Colton Westphal recorded one hit each on the afternoon. Lund, Westphal and Miller drove in two runs each for the Titans, while senior Oscar Salazar, Kotz, Gallardo and Stecklien added one RBI each in the loss.

Lund, Kotz, Westphal and Gallardo all doubled on the day, while Kotz led the Titans with two stolen bases in the loss.

Stecklien started for the Titans and worked 4.1 innings, allowing nine runs (one earned) while striking out seven hitters and walking three. Lund relieved Stecklien and worked 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking two.

The win pushes Glenwood Springs to 1-1 on the season. The Demons travel to Peoria, Arizona, Monday for the first of three games in Arizona during Glenwood’s spring break. Coal Ridge falls to 1-2 on the season and returns to action April 2 on the road at Paonia.
