Glenwood Springs baseball sweep Battle Mountain in 4A WSL doubleheader

Returning to the friendly confines of Glenwood Springs Middle School Tuesday, for the first time since March 21, the Glenwood Springs Demons baseball team took advantage of the return home to roll to a doubleheader sweep of the Battle Mountain Huskies by scores of 16-5 in Game One, and 8-2 in Game Two.

Glenwood wasted no time in the first game getting the offense going. Battle Mountain jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Glenwood roared back with a run in the bottom of the first inning before exploding for four runs in the second, five in the third, and three each in the fourth and fifth innings. Battle tried to rally in the top of the fifth inning with five runs, but it wasn’t enough in the end as Glenwood cruised to the 11-run win via the mercy rule.

As a team, the Demons pounded out 15 hits in the first game, led by sophomore Wheatley Nieslanik’s three hits, including two doubles on the afternoon. Seniors Chano Gonzalez, Leo Anchondo, Liam McMahon and Dylan Lee and junior Ashlan Stolley added two hits each, with Gonzalez recording a double on the afternoon. Gonzalez and Lee led the Demons with three runs batted in each, while Anchondo drove in two. McMahon, Nieslanik, senior Tyler Dollahan and freshman Blake Nieslanik added one RBI each in the win.

On the mound in Game One, Gonzalez allowed the one run in the first inning but then cruised through four strong innings of work, holding the Huskies to just one hit while striking out 10 batters for the Demons.

It was much of the same on the mound in Game Two for the Demons as Wheatley Nieslanik cruised through five innings of work in shutting down the Huskies’ offense.

Nieslanik allowed just five hits and two earned runs on the day while striking out a pair.

As Nieslanik shut down Battle Mountain on the mound, the Demons were much quieter at the plate, scraping together four hits and three RBIs, pushing across eight total runs in the nightcap.

Senior Kai Kanzer doubled and drove in a run, while Dollahan singled and drove in a run of his own. Lee recorded a single, and Anchondo drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. As a team, Glenwood drew eight walks in the second game.

Lee closed out the Game Two win for the Demons, working two innings of clean baseball, allowing just one hit while striking out one.

The doubleheader sweep sees the Demons improve to 6-6 (2-0 4A WSL) on the season. Glenwood travels to Cooper Field Saturday to take on the Rifle Bears in a 4A Western Slope League and rivalry doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
