PREP ROUNDUP: Roaring Fork baseball drops thriller to Aspen in 9 innings; CRMS girls soccer edges Del Norte 4-3 in overtime

Taking on the Aspen Skiers in El Jebel Tuesday in a 3A Western Slope League battle, the Roaring Fork Rams baseball team dropped a tough 6-5 decision in nine innings.

The Skiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as the Skiers scored on an error and a sacrifice bunt. The Rams evened things up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning, though, as freshman David Good hit a leadoff single and then stole second base. Junior Eli Nickamin then walked before senior Layne Crisp drove in Good with an RBI single to make it 2-1. Senior Dawson Kuhl then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center.

Following the two-run burst in the fifth inning, the Rams added a run in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead as freshman Mason Smith doubled and scored on a single by Good. Holding the 3-2 lead, the Rams looked to close it out, but the Skiers added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, forcing extra innings.

The two league opponents failed to score in the eighth inning, but the Rams added on in the top of the ninth as sophomore Graham Pietsch drove in Crisp and Kuhl with a two-run single for a 5-3 lead. That lead failed to hold up, though, as the Skiers scored three to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, thanks to three walks, two hit by pitches, and a single.

The loss drops Roaring Fork to 6-13 (4-3 in 3A WSL) on the season. The Rams host Grand Valley Thursday at Ron Patch Memorial Field in Carbondale for a 3A Western Slope League doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
