Rams’ Boyle pitches no-no against Skiers
CARBONDALE – Jake Boyle had a nearly perfect day on the baseball diamond.
As Roaring Fork’s starting pitcher against Aspen, the junior tossed a mercy-rule shortened no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 14-0 rout over the Skiers on Thursday.
And to make the day a little sweeter Boyle had three hits, four RBIs and reached base in all four plate appearances.
Quite a turnaround for the 1-1 Rams, who dropped a 5-3 season-opener at Class 2A Paonia a couple of days before.
From the beginning, there was no doubt about who was in control of the Western Slope League contest.
Roaring Fork pounded Aspen starter Zac Paris for five runs in the first inning, batting through its lineup before the Skiers could get out of the frame.
Max Green greeted Paris with a leadoff double. Boyle smacked in the game’s initial runs with a two-run run double, scoring Green and Taylor Arbaney, who had walked.
Two Aspen errors and designated hitter Misael Fernandez’s single accounted for the other three Ram runs.
Before the game was called in the fifth, Roaring Fork forced Aspen into using four different pitchers and had racked up 12 hits.
The 5-0 lead was more than enough for Boyle.
A one-out, first-inning fielding error by Ram third baseman Casey Griffith was the only blemish to Boyle’s performance, and Aspen baserunner Pat Faurer never got beyond first base.
Boyle recovered by striking out the Skiers’ next hitter Josh Lackey for the second out, Bill Salazar grounded out to end the inning.
As Roaring Fork added to its lead with runs in every inning, Boyle kept slamming the door on the Skiers.
In the game’s final four innings, the Ram junior retired 12 straight Aspen hitters.
Roaring Fork plays its final game before spring break on Saturday at 1 p.m. against nonleague Bayfield at Delta high school.
