Rams get best of Glenwood in season opener

CARBONDALE – The Roaring Fork Rams boys’ basketball team withstood a strong fourth quarter run by Glenwood Springs to advance to the championship game Friday at the Brenda Patch Tournament.

Four Roaring Fork players, led by Dan Markoya’s 15 points, scored in double figures in a 67-64 win over the Demons.

Both teams battled for control of the game in the first quarter with Glenwood taking a 19-17 lead at the end of the period.



Down by two, Roaring Fork’s offense, posted 22 points in the second period and held the Demons to 13 to take a 39-32 lead at intermission.

The two teams dueled to a 13-all tie in the third quarter before Glenwood started to inch back in the game’s final eight minutes.



The Demons’ Sean Flohr, Andrew Blake and Jesse Hansen led the attack to get close before running out of time.

Flohr paced the Demons with 15 points. Blake scored 13, Hansen added 12 and Marco Salmen tossed in 9 points.

Roaring Fork got strong performances from Jake Boyle, who finished with 13 points, Aaron Markham scored 12, Nick Lough tossed in 10.

In Friday’s other tournament game, Green River, Wyo., defeated Steamboat Springs 60-57 in overtime.

Joe Killpack scored four of the Wolves’ eight points in the extra period to down the Class 4A Western Slope League Steamboat.

Steamboat’s Cory Moore was the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. Bill Mickelson led Green River with 20.
