Rams, Longhorns face tougher foes in semis

Roaring Fork and Basalt cruised through the first round of the girls Class 3A District 2 tournament Tuesday night.

Things should get a little tougher tonight in the semifinal round.

There were no surprises in the first round, with the top four seeds all advancing to the semifinals.

No. 2-seed Roaring Fork (16-4) takes on No. 3-seed Cedaredge (16-4) at 6:30 p.m. tonight and top seeded Basalt (17-3) battles rival Aspen (13-7) at 8 p.m. Both games are at Palisade High School.

Like Roaring Fork, which defeated Hotchkiss 71-43 in the first round, Cedaredge had a relatively easy go against Olathe, beating the Pirates 55-28.

Cedaredge and Roaring Fork split the season series, with each team winning on the other’s home court. Cedaredge downed the Rams 70-65 at the end of January, but Roaring Fork returned the favor with a 58-45 victory in Cedaredge on Feb. 15.

Basalt also split its season series with its semifinal opponent. Aspen was the only Western Slope League team to defeat Basalt this season, knocking off the Longhorns 48-42.

The loss was the first league loss in nearly two seasons for the Longhorns and 42 points was the lowest offensive output of the year for Basalt.

The Longhorns haven’t lost since then, and redeemed themselves earlier this month with a 58-43 victory over the Skiers.

The winners of tonight’s games advance to the championship contest Saturday at 4 p.m. at Palisade High School. The losers head to the third- and fourth-place game Saturday at 1 p.m. The top five teams advance to the state tournament.

In loser-out games Thursday, Gunnison faces Eagle Valley at 5 p.m. and Olathe takes on Hotchkiss at 3:30 p.m.
