Rams shake off Cowboys

CARBONDALE ” It took some time to shake a stubborn Gunnison squad, but the outside shooting and tight defense eventually paid off for Roaring Fork as the Rams downed the Cowboys 57-44 Saturday night in boys Class 3A Western Slope League play.
“We weren’t performing on offense like we would have liked,” said Roaring Fork’s Jake Boyle of the Rams’ early play. “(The Cowboys) were throwing us off a little and we were still trying to force it.”
While the Rams (11-0 WSL, 16-0 overall) never trailed after the first minute of play, it wasn’t until late in the first half that a few three-point plays gave Roaring Fork some breathing room.
Up 18-16 with 4:21 left in the frame, Roaring Fork took a timeout. The result was three three-pointers to close out the half and a 27-20 lead at intermission.
Boyle hit his second trey of the quarter to put the Rams up 21-16, but Gunnison’s Nick Spallone answered with a driving layup on the next possession. Dan Markoya kept the Rams on the three-pointer route with one of his five field goals from beyond the arc only to see Spallone again answer with a jumper.
Roaring Fork’s Christian Tena finished off the 9-4 run, and this time didn’t allow Spallone to answer back. Tena pulled down an offensive board then was fouled on his put-back basket, sinking the free throw with less than a second left in the half.
Markoya opened the third quarter with another trey and Gunnison (4-6, 4-11) never pulled closer than six points the rest of the game. By the end of the quarter Roaring Fork had a commanding 41-29 lead.
Markoya led all scorers with 19 points, going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Point guard Aaron Markham finished an assist short of a double-double with 10 points and Tena tallied nine points.
Brian Bollig paced Gunnison with 17 points and Jesse Soderberg scored 13.
