Red-hot Geckos sweep DH in GJ

GRAND JUNCTION — Caden Lerbakken hit a grand slam in the first game, and Xavier Trujillo hit a key RBI double in the second game of a Mountain West Summer Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader on Tuesday for the Glenwood Springs Geckos, who continued to stay hot with their twin-bill sweep of the Grand Junction Rocky Mountain Oysters at Suplizio Field.

Glenwood won the opener 7-5 before completing the sweep with a 9-7 win in the second game.

Lerbakken’s blast in the fifth inning gave the Geckos (13-11), winners of nine of their last 10 games, a 6-2 lead. Starting pitcher Bryce Johnson took it from there with his complete-game pitching victory, finishing with 11 strikeouts while allowing one walk, six hits and just two errors.

In the second game, Grand Junction (15-11) opened the game with a five-run first inning before Glenwood rallied with a seven-run frame in the top of the second, giving the Geckos a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Will Ray had a two-run single, and Trujillo had a run-scoring double in the frame, when Glenwood sent 12 batters to the plate.

Glenwood, which was 4-10 just 10 days ago, now trails first-place Grand Junction by just two games in the win column of the league standings. Glenwood plays Summit in Frisco on Thursday afternoon before returning home Saturday to host Vail.
