Regional teams set

Four teams. Two advance to state, two end their season.

Those are the stakes involved in the Class 4A, Region B prep volleyball tournament, which takes place Saturday at Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium on the campus of Glenwood Springs High School.

By winning last week’s district tournament, undefeated Glenwood (24-0) was ranked second by the Colorado High School Activities Association’s volleyball committee among the remaining 16 teams who advanced from districts to regional play.

The top four ranked teams by CHSAA get to host regional tournaments. All four must complete play by Saturday.

The field at GSHS consists of the host Demons – regular season Western Slope League champs, and guests from seventh-seeded Windsor (20-4), tenth-seeded Fort Morgan (18-6), and 15th-seeded Pueblo Centennial.

Three of the four teams are ranked in the Denver Post’s final regular season Class 4A state polls.

Glenwood is ranked No. 3 by the Denver Post. Windsor is sixth and Fort Morgan, which defeated the 4A’s former No. 1 Lewis Palmer in district play in Monument, is ranked No. 7.

All four teams will play in a round-robin format. The top two teams with the best win-loss records advance to next week’s 4A state tournament at the Denver Coliseum.

Play opens at 9 a.m. Saturday with Windsor facing Fort Morgan. At 10:30, the Demons take the court for their opening match against Pueblo Centennial.

Windsor takes on Centennial at noon, followed by the Glenwood-Fort Morgan match, scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Times could change depending on length of the games.

Tournament play concludes with Fort Morgan playing Centennial and Glenwood battling Windsor.
