Saturday’s 9th annual Banzai Trail 5K in West Glenwood drew a field of 29 runners and walkers on a mild morning that was mixed with rain and sunshine.

The victor on the day was Glenwood Middle School 7th grader Reid Swanson, who turned in a time of 19 minutes, 33 seconds on the hilly, and at times, slippery trail run. Another GSMS student, 8th grader Will Berkheimer, was second overall, as he came to the finish line about a minute behind Swanson in 20:30. Keeping things in the family, Glenwood Elementary 4th grader Benny Swanson, Reid’s brother, rounded out the podium finishers at 21:55. Also of GSES, Jack Berkheimer was fourth overall at 23:57.

Glenwood resident Jennifer Smith was tops for the ladies with a time of 27:50. Smith was followed by Priska Berkheimer at 27:57, and Cristina Sirianni with a time of 28:28.

All proceeds from the race will go toward helping out the creatures at the Colorado Animal Rescue, Rifle Animal Shelter, Valley Dog Rescue, Lucky Day Animal Rescue, and the Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation.
