RF Women’s Triathlon places third at Club Nationals
For the first time in the history of the Roaring Fork Women’s Triathlon Team, members of the summer club were asked by their coaches to step up to compete at USA Triathlon Club Nationals in Loveland, on Saturday.
Twenty-two members took the challenge as their training and commitment paid off, coming home with a third place trophy in the USAT Division IV competition. The members of the Club Nationals Team range in age from 32-71, and they live from Basalt to Rifle. The team was divided between the sprint distance (800-yard swim, 15-mile bike, 4-mile run); Olympic distance (1,500-yard swim, 30-mile bike, 10K run); and Sprint Relay.
The Roaring Fork club garnered 105 points with 19 of 22 members gaining points by being in the top 10 of their age group. Four members placed in the top three of their age groups, with Natasha Ellwood placing third in the 30-34 age group. Coach Sharma Phillips placed third in the 35-39 age group, Caryn Hettler placed second in the 50-54 age group, and Carol McCurry placed third in the 65-69 age group.
“It was a kick to take our competitive athletes to the front range and see how we measure up,” head coach Nancy Reinisch said. “We kept our mission of fun and fitness but added some spice to our season. Coming home with a trophy and a cash award was a surprise for all of us.”
Phillips, who assisted Reinisch with designing training plans and workouts, added, “The Lake To Lake Loveland course was great for our team with the open water lake swim, rolling hills on the bike, and a run that circled Lake Loveland. We were so proud of the way everyone stepped up today.”
