Rifle baseball team sweeps doubleheader

The Rifle High School baseball team swept a doubleheader from Battle Mountain Saturday at Cooper Field.

The games originally were scheduled for Battle Mountain, but were moved because of unplayable conditions there.

Rifle won the first game 15-3 in five innings. The Bears won the second game 7-1.

Brad Pace pitched a complete game for the Bears in the first game, striking out eight in five innings.

Jesse Holgate led off the game with a homer for the Bears. Blake Barth and Arbaney added doubles for the Bears.

Holgate finished a homer, single and three runs scored. Owen Madison was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.

In the second game, Josh May pitched a complete-game four-hitter, with no walks. In fact, Rifle pitchers did not allow a walk in either game.

Madison and Danny Fedirko each had three hits for the Bears. Madison drove in three. Holgate added two more hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases.

The two conference wins came on the heels of a 6-3 nonleague loss at Montrose late last week.

Now the Bears stand 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the 4A Western Slope League.

Rifle will host Palisade on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Cooper Field.
