Rifle boys finish regular season undefeated

RIFLE – Ryan Schideler connected for a game-high 22 points, and Rifle broke open a tight game with a 23-14 scoring burst against Steamboat Springs, while breezing to a 61-39 win over the Sailors Saturday at the Bear Lair.

The win raised the Bears final regular-season record in the Class 4A Western Slope League to an unbeaten 12-0.

Rifle, by winning the WSL title has earned the No. 1 seed at this weekend’s District 6 tournament, to be held at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.



Center Zack Akin continues to post strong numbers. The 6-foot, 5-inch senior finished with 12 points. Guard Adam Krick added 10.

No Steamboat player scored more than eight points against Rifle’s defense.

RIFLE – The 9-3 Bears got a 25-point effort from junior guard Julie McWilliams, which included four 3-pointers, in a 61-39 victory over Steamboat which boosted Rifle to second place in the final regular-season league game for both teams.

The Bears broke the game open in the second period by outscoring the 8-4 Sailors, 17-5, in the quarter.

After gaining a 15-point lead at halftime, Rifle cruised in the second half, outscoring Steamboat in the game’s final two quarters.

With the win, the Bears have secured the No. 3 seed in the eight-team district tournament, which includes 4A Southwestern League schools Montrose and Montezuma-Cortez.

According to rules set by the participating schools, the two Southwestern League teams automatically receive the Nos. 2 and 5 seeds, depending on their final league win-loss record.
