Rifle boys survive scare, advance to semis

GRAND JUNCTION – The Rifle Bears boys basketball team, which went undefeated in league play this season, got a little scare from a team that had to play a pigtail game just to get into the Class 4A District 7 tourney.

League champion Rifle led by just two points at halftime against Battle Mountain, but turned on the offensive and defensive pressure to roll to a 58-37 victory in the tournament’s opening round.

“Battle Mountain played real well in the first half and hit some shots on us,” Rifle coach Chris Lowther said. “We picked up our energy level on defense and pressed them a little bit (in the second half) and that caused them some problems.”

Rifle faces Steamboat Springs in the semifinal round tonight at 8:15 at Mesa State College. Battle Mountain takes on Montrose in an elimination game at 8:15 p.m. at Grand Junction High School.

Ryan Shideler paced Rifle with 13 points, while Zach Akin and Aaron Jewell notched 10 and nine, respectively.
