RIFLE ” Two tournaments. Two runner-up finishes for Rifle ” against Class 5A competition. It’s a little beneath priceless. Yet, it’s a good sign for the Bears.

Playing on their home course at Rifle Creek Golf Club for the Rifle Invitational, the Bears’ combined team score of 290 allowed them to nose out third place Durango by a stroke and Moffat County by two.

Grand Junction Central, led by individual medalist Melissa Martin, won the team title with a score of 257.

Martin, who’s won three Western Slope prep girls tournaments this year, carded a round of 82 to teammate Valorie Hoppe’s 84. Grand Valley Invitational individual champ Emma Watson of Cedaredge was third at 86.

Rifle’s Ashley Chastain, also for the second straight tournament, had the lowest individual score among area golfers at 93, good enough for seventh place overall.

Teammate Kori Kosht, a shot back at 94, tied for eighth. Fellow Bears Carrie Kreimier and Alicia Eggen came in at 103 each.

Sixth-place Glenwood Springs got even scores from its top four players. Emily Hauptli ended at 101, followed by Michelle Stripp (102), Lisa Richards (103) and Maggee Becker (107), respectively.

Both area teams resume tour play April 20 at Montrose.
