Rifle defeated by Montrose Thursday

MONTROSE – Despite 35 points and six 3-pointers from the Rust brothers, the Rifle boys basketball team was narrowly defeated by Montrose on Thursday night 59-56 in Montrose.Scott Rust totaled 19 points and two 3s while his younger brother Tyler scored 16 and nailed four 3s in the contest.Rifle started strong, taking a 27-25 lead at halftime, but Montrose outscored the Bears 15-8 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Drew Blatchford chipped in 12 points for the Bears.The Rifle girls squad also fell to Montrose, by a score of 39-30 on Thursday night. Stats from the game were unavailable.The Rifle boys (3-5) will be off for Winter Break, but return to action on Jan. 9 when they host the Glenwood Springs Demons to open up the Class 4A Western Slope League season. The Rifle girls (3-5) will also start league play against the Demons, hosting them on Jan. 8.
