Rifle dominates 2005 all-league softball team

Rifle High’s efforts during the recently concluded softball season resulted in five starters earning first team, all-league honors in a vote by the league’s coaches.

Seniors Amber Massey, Lindsey McCue-Locke and Bridget Peters along with junior Sarah Brusig and sophomore Megan McWilliams received first-team honors.

Two more Bear players ” senior Katie Buchanan and sophomore Alissa Skinner ” earned honorable mention.



Additionally, Rifle head coach Troy Phillips was tabbed as the Class 4A Western Slope League’s coach of the year.

In his third season as head coach, Phillips guided the Bears to a 15-5 overall record and the league’s regular-season pennant, highlighted by a 12-game winning streak.



Massey, an infielder, led Rifle with 30 hits in 63 at bats and tied for the team lead in RBI’s with 25.

Peters, who hit .480, posted the team’s highest individual batting average with 17 RBI’s and five extra-base hits.

McCue-Locke, the Bears’ starting catcher for three seasons, had the best fielding average among the regulars, committing just three errors while hitting .380.

Brusig socked in 14 runs while hitting at a .382 clip with three doubles while co-leading the team in runs scored with 24.

McWilliams, equally adept from the pitching circle and the plate, finished the season with a perfect 6-0 pitching record and hit a robust .426.

The sophomore also led Rifle in extra base hits with five doubles and three triples among her 26 hits with 25 RBI’s.

Buchanan compiled a .439 batting average with 18 hits in 41 at bats. Skinner had team highs among Rifle’s pitchers with eight wins, 38 strikeouts, two saves and 67 innings pitched.

Palisade ” Val Cary, senior, infield; Lindsey Osburn, junior, infield.

Player of the Year ” Val Cary, Palisade

Coach of the Year ” Troy Phillips, Rifle
