Staff ReportGlenwood Springs, CO Colorado

DELTA Rifle moved to 2-0 on Friday, outscoring Delta 14-6 in its first league contest of 2007. Tyler Chapman and Danny Maldonaldo each scored touchdowns for the Bears in the win. After a 0-0 first half, Rifle head coach Damon Wells challenged his team to take control of the game.”We challenged them at halftime, and in the second half they came out more like the Rifle of old,” he said. “That’s the hardest thing, getting them to realize it is not the talent, it is the hard work and determination.”The speech worked and Rifle delivered. Chapman, who rushed for 134 yards in 18 carries, scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Then Maldonado scored another with two minutes to go in the game.Delta’s lone TD came on a fourth-and-goal from the 19 yard line with 30 seconds left. It was Rifle defense’s only slip-up.”Alfonso Alfini is a defensive mastermind,” Wells said of his assistant coach with a laugh. Hazen Moss rushed for 80 yards and Brian Key added 82 more for the Bears.Next on tap for the Bears will be their first Class 3A Western Slope League game – a home contest against Cortez.
