Rifle High sophomore takes fifth in boys golf season opener

CEDAREDGE — Rifle High School sophomore Jacob Smith was the top Garfield County golfer of the tournament at the season-opening Cedaredge Invitational tournament played Thursday at Cedaredge Golf Club.

Smith, a state qualifier as a freshman a year ago, came in at 6-over 78 to finish in a fifth-place tie with Eagle Valley’s Barrett Jones.

Earning medalist honors was Chris Rudosky, who carded a five-shot victory with a 1-under 71. Montrose’s Glen Michael Mihavetz and Aspen’s Coulter Zwing finished in a tie for second place at 76, with Zwing’s Aspen teammate, Dominic Ianese, finishing fourth with a 77.

The Top 5 finishes by Zwing and Ianese helped Aspen win the team championship with a score of 242. Eagle Valley was second at 250, followed by Delta (252), Montrose (253), host Cedaredge (255) and Rifle (260).

Also competing in the tournament was Coal Ridge, which finished 10th in the 11-team field with a score of 288.

Coal Ridge and Rifle will play again on Monday, Aug. 17, during a tournament which will be at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.
